So I have received word of another event taking place in Cork for Europe Day. Its taking place in the Glucksman Gallery of University College Cork. Here is the email I got.

An Exhibition by Irish Times Cartoonist Martyn Turner

It often takes an outside perspective to point out society’s idiosyncracies. Martyn Turner, cartoonist with the Irish Times, does this par excellence. His brand of humour is invariably insightful, but never vitriolic. Through his art-form, he has captured the absurdities and peculiarities which sporadically infect Irish political life. Indeed, his cartoons are the reason many open the morning paper.

To mark Europe Day 2010, and with the generous support of the Glucksman Gallery and the European Commission Representation in Ireland, the Department of Government is delighted to provide an opportunity for people to view the work of Martyn Turner. The Eurotoons exhibition focuses on Ireland’s ‘European’ experience over the last 50 years or so. It will be launched in the Glucksman Gallery at 2pm on Friday 7 May by Vice-President for Teaching and Learning, Professor Grace Neville.

All are welcome to attend the launch and exhibition.

Should be interesting. I will definitely be paying a visit!

I received information today about a Europe Day event that will take place in Bailieborough, Co. Cavan. It is hosted by Cllr Seán McKiernan Jnr and Senator Joe O’Reilly.

Monday 10th May – A Celebration of Europe Day

John Bruton, our former Taoiseach and former EU Ambassador to the USA, will speak on his experiences in America and his reflections on the future of Ireland and Europe.

As posted earlier there will be an event in Cork City for Europe Day. This will take place on May 7th at lunch time. The event will be a canvass and will involve the handing out of pens and lollipops and of course talking about Europe.

So why am I blogging about this? Well we need volunteers! Anyone who volunteers will be fully briefed and supplied with t-shirt, bag, pens etc. They will also be fed!

You do not need to be an expert on Europe and you will be given all the information you need. If you do get a difficult question then there will be someone on hand to answer it for you!

Just a quick update. I have a meeting later today with the European Movement Ireland about an event in Cork for Europe Day. It will be held on Friday May 7th. There will be other events in other cities across the country.

To give you an idea what is planned this is what the European Movement have on their website:

As part of our Europe Day celebrations this year, EM Ireland staff and members will be canvassing in hubs around the country handing out lollipops, pens and balloons. We will also be distributing Citizens’ Initiative postcards, answering people’s questions, and generally having a chat about Europe. This will take place on Friday 7 May.

On Sunday 9 May, there will be a special screening of the My Vision for Europe videos in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. The programme was coordinated in conjunction with the European Parliament in Dublin and the Temple Bar Cultural Trust. The standard of submissions was extremely high and we are delighted that the finalists’ videos from the schools project will be publicly broadcast on Europe Day itself.

So what started off in the comments on my post about Europe Day and continued on twitter and email has come to fruition. I give to you, My Europe Week! It takes place from the 3rd to 9th of May.

My Europe Week is a way of celebrating Europe Day online. By running for a week we incorporate both the Council of Europe’s Europe Day on May 5th (marking its foundation) and the EU’s Europe Day on May 9th (the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration).

My Europe is chance for you to say what you want from Europe. If you want more or less. If you think things should be done differently. We want to know where do you want your Europe to go! You can write about any subject relating to Europe and how you want it to develop or how it is already!

To take part simply blog about it and then let us know through this form that you have blogged. If you dont blog, you can submit a post through the form!

Please spread the word, we want as many people as possible to take part! Keep an eye on the blog for updates and of course the actual posts come My Europe Week!

They have created a logo and a page for all the events taking place across Europe.

There will be events organised in Ireland and if you know of any please email stephen(at)stephespillane(dot)com and I will publish them.

The lovely people at the European Movement Ireland tell me there will be something happening in Ireland on the 7th of May, as Europe Day is on a Sunday this year. So stayed tuned!

This arrived in my inbox today. It may be of interest to some readers!

You may wish to be aware that Mr. Micheál Martin, T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs, has announced details of the 2010 Communicating Europe Initiative. Applications for funding are invited from voluntary organisations and education bodies who are interested in raising awareness about how the European Union matters in their community.

Consideration will also be given to proposals for events, large or small, that are organised to celebrate Europe Day. Europe Day, which takes place on 9 May each year, is an opportunity for citizens throughout Europe to celebrate the EU’s achievements and to reflect upon the Union’s aim to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples.

Minister Martin said:

“Last October, the Irish people wholeheartedly reaffirmed their desire for Ireland to remain at the heart of Europe. Voluntary organisations and education bodies played a vital role in raising awareness of how the EU matters in their communities and supporting their efforts continues to be a key priority for me.

I look forward to receiving applications under this year’s Communicating Europe Initiative. Events commemorating Europe Day on 9 May are a great way for Irish citizens to join with their fellow Europeans in celebrating the achievements of the EU and I am delighted that such events are among those that can be supported under the Communicating Europe Initiative.”
