The Campaign for Children will be holding a public meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 25th, at 6pm in the Geogrpahy Lecture Hall in UCC. It is part of a series of public meetings to inform people about the work of the campaign. The Campaign is chaired by Former Supreme Court Justice Catherine McGuinness. Its board also contains some influential people, including Fergus Finlay of Barnardos and Olivia O’Leary. The Campaign raises very important issues and more importantly has suggestions to how they should be solved....

Asking the Candidates: If elected will you continue to use Facebook/Twitter

After thinking about all the tweets and facebooking from the Irish Presidential Candidates, I decided to ask them if they would contine use Twitter/Facebook if they were elected President of the Republic of Ireland. I asked the question on Twitter initially, but then posted it also on the candidates Facebook to give them all a fair chance of responding. These are the respons in the order I have recieved them and on what medium they responded on. Mary Davis -...

Fine Gael launches a Facebook Campaign

As the election was announced yesterday, I noticed messages appearing in my Facebook feed like this one: It would seem that Fine Gael have launched a facebook widget which is linked from their website. It is an interesting move from the party and I wonder how it will play out on Facebook. I myself am a bit sceptical because it seems to be trying to use American Campaign techniques, and I am not sure how it will go down. It also is not...

The Dáil must vote on the Bailout

Image via Wikipedia Charlie Flanagan TD has flagged up an interesting article in Bunreacht na hEireann on Facebook which could cause a headache for the Government. The Constitution in Article 29.5.2 states The State shall not be bound by any international agreement involving a charge upon public funds unless the terms of the agreement shall have been approved by Dáil Éireann. This will lead to a few interesting days in the Dáil chamber. The Bailout cannot be drawn down...

Why does all this ‘Bond Market Malarkey’ Matter?

Image via CrunchBase As I have recently begun writing about the Bond Markets and posting about it on Facebook, an interesting discussion has taken place on why are we bothering reporting on it if we currently aren’t borrowing from the bond market and what exactly are bonds. So myself and another friend tried to explain why it is important. Comment 1: Good job we are not actually borrowing at the moment!! (Which is why I am surprised that we...

Facebook Change

Image by Getty Images via Daylife Today I implemented a change to how I use facebook as a bit of an experiment. Normally my blog posts are automatically imported as notes on my own page. From today that is no longer the case. I have set up a fan page for this blog and in future all notes shall be imported there. Do become a fan! I wonder how it will go?

Jan Moir

I wasn’t actually going to blog about that Jan Moir article in the UK Daily Mail (they had more sense not to publish in the Irish version) but a statement released by Jan Moir claims that we are all over reacting and there is a ‘heavily orchestrated internet campaign‘ against her. (Link via @Glinner) It is amazing that someone with views like that are allowed print them. It is crazy and it is offensive. To be honest, I wasn’t...

The Flower of Identity

Image by cobalt123 via Flickr In Luxembourg as part of the training with the Anna Lindh Foundation we had to write a list of things that we think identify us. One suggestion was to draw a flower and on each petal write one thing. I of course am useless at drawing so decided to write a list. So how do I see myself? The first things that came to my mind was European, the next was Irish and after...

Should Ferris Go to Jail

Image via Wikipedia A friend, Dave Maloney has written an interesting note on Facebook, which I couldnt help posting about here. Sinn Féin TD (and convicted gun runner) Martin Ferris aided the released killers (Pearse McCauley and Kevin Walsh) of Garda Jerry McCabe in evading the Gardaí. On RTE’S News at One, Conor Lally the Irish Times Crime Correspondent stated that the van in which Ferris was in, was used to block the road, preventing an unmarked Garda car...
