Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead: Ind/Dem Loses its Co-Leader

Kathy Sinnott (Ind/Dem) is no longer an MEP! Results from the Count Centre in Cork show that Senator Alan Kelly of Labour has beaten Sinnott on the final count for the final seat in Ireland South. It was a mixed day in Cork with at one point looking like Toireasa Ferris of Sinn Fein was in a shout of the last the seat, but she failed to attracted enough transfers and Sinnott leap frogged past her. It was then...

So today is the last day of the campaign. I have been mad on the campaign trail for the last few days actually going out canvassing during the day. Today I was in Ballyvolane and Blackpool in Cork City as well as the City Centre canvassing for Colm. What a reaction we got. It was fantastic. He was well recieved...

Fianna Fail to loose 2 MEPs?

The latest predictions from Predict 09 are out and they make for interesting reading for the Irish predictions. According to it Fine Gael will remain the largest party with five MEP’s and 30% of the vote. They say the Fianna Fail will loose two MEPs. And I have to agree with them. They predict that Fianna Fail will get 28% of the vote. Labour look to be the big gainers and will gain a seat at the expense of...

CandidateWatch: My First Question!

Image by Getty Images via Daylife So I finally asked my first question on CandidateWatch. I asked the following to Ireland South’s Independent MEP Kathy Sinnot: Do you think that Ireland should withdraw from the European Union? The reason I ask this is that you are sitting in a European Parliament group with UKIP who believe that the United Kingdom should leave the Union. Ill post the response when I get it. Incidently the first question asked to her...

7th Think Post: Finding Your Candidates Online

Below is my 7th Thinkaboutit.eu post. I have posted it in full so dont forget to rate it on the competition website! A problem for me during the last European Elections in 2004 was finding out about candidates running for  election. Although I couldn’t vote and was sitting my Leaving Certificate I was interested in who was running and finding out more about the candidates in my constituency. In my constituency, Ireland South, there were ten candidates running for...

November 27, 2008
By Stephen

So Sean Kelly, former President of the GAA has thrown his hat in the ring for a place on the Fine Gael ticket in Ireland South, but can Fine Gael win two seats in Ireland South? At the last election in 2004 the quota was 121,068. Fine Gael’s Simon Coveney got 118,937 first preferences votes. The combined Fianna Fail first preference vote (Brian Crowley and Gerard Collins) was 198,670 and they failed to get two candidates elected. This strategy...

Ireland South: A look ahead

November 4, 2008
By Stephen

So a thread over on Machine Nation got me thinking ahead to next June’s European Elections. Some parties, including the Greens, Labour and Sinn Fein have selected their candidates. FF are a foregone conclusion with FG the only major party left to select. Of course Kathy Sinnott will run again. Libertas who say it is “substantially correct” that they have registered as a European Political Party. So who is running (in no particular order):Labour (Party of European Socialists) are...
