Diary of a Canvasser: Its all over

So that last week of the flew by and before I knew it I was voting an tallying the results! I had a very long weekend awaiting results, but for a change in a national election, the results had me and others shocked. We knew Fine Gael were going to do well, but we didnt think we were going to do *this* well. It was amazing to see Fine Gael Candidates who I had met over the years topping the poll...

Diary of a Canvasser: Enda Comes to Town

I did not expect to be adding to my diary today, but last night I got a text to say that Enda Kenny would be campaigning in Cork today. So I got up early to head into town to meet up the leaders tour. The rain was terrible, and the tour and run over time in the Simon Community and St Johns College so when Enda arrived we went to the English Market, that favourite of campaign stops when...

Diary of a Canvasser: Dawn to Dusk (and beyond!)

I have finished another week on the door steps and this week saw me canvassing for Jerry Buttimer and Deridre Clune. On Monday we were out canvassing in Ballinlough for Jerry Buttimer and we got a good response. I got my first local issue on the door that night. Someone was giving out about City Council and the pothole outside their house. This was no ordinary pothole though! It was huge! So she had to complain! Thankfully Enda had...

Diary of a Canvasser: 3 Nights, 3 Candidates

This week I have been sharing my time with the three Fine Gael candidates in Cork South Central. I find that is the best and easiest thing to do. It also broadens your canvassing experience! Monday So on Monday I was out with Deirdre Clune. We were canvassing in Donnybrook in Douglas. I was paired with Fiona and it seemed that we got every nice person in the estate! We had lovely chats with people who wanted to talk...

Diary of A Canvasser: Day Out, Day In

Image via Wikipedia Well with election coming up, canvass teams have swung into full operation down here in Cork. Last week for the first time I both ended and started my day with a canvass! This would be something that would seem to be a recurring theme for the election. There goes my lie-ins! Last Monday (24th January) we canvassed an area of Douglas with Jerry Buttimer. We had a very good response and covered great ground. The issues...

Senators Defend the Seanad

Image via Wikipedia Although they made sound like turkeys voting against Christmas, two Senators have made good arguments in favour of keeping Seanad Eireann. Yesterday speaking to the Irish Times, Independent Senator Joe O’Toole had the following to say, Speaking this afternoon, Sen. O’Toole acknowledged the existing arrangement was “undemocratic, unfair” and “unrepresentative” and described voting arrangements for the Upper House, where it does not have a universal mandate, as “indefensible”. However, the independent senator said the abolition of...

Diary of a Canvasser: Winter Election Campaign

Image via Wikipedia During the Local and European Elections back in 2009 I tried to keep a bit of Canvass Diary to chart the mood and feelings and experiences on the Canvass Trial. For the upcoming General Election I plan to try and post about what is happening on the ground, where ever I end up canvassing! So my General Election campaign started today with a canvass for Senator Jerry Buttimer in Cork South Central. We started in an...

Cork South Central

Image via Wikipedia Over the years this blog has payed a great deal of attention to the constituency of Cork South Central. This mainly due to the fact that I am from that particular constituency and for most of my life, I have lived, studied and worked in the Constituency. The Evening Echo had an internal Fine Gael poll at the end of last week. The results made some interesting reading, the figures in brackets are the results from 2007. Simon...
